Depression,types,triggers,effects,treatments

Sadness, grief, anxiety and so on all of these are familiar experiences of every person. But if these feelings continue for a long period then it can be characterized as depression.
In these article we will look into what depression is all about!,why it is caused,types, effects,treatments,and some small lifestyle changes for reducing risk of depression

   Depression:

      Depression simply can be stated as a mood disorder involving grief and dullness.
   In medical words, depression is the state of mental illness with effect by Biochemical of Neurotransmitter especially Serotonin which is the most outstanding on active or happiness concerned.                                                                                                                                      ~ EDIT YOUR LIFE Design Your Destiny

  Summarizing the above definition
       High levels of Serotonin in the brain are linked to elevated mood and feeling happy, whereas low levels of Serotonin are linked to the symptoms of depression,including feeling sad,upset and generally low in mood


what happens if  you are depressed?    

1 Loneliness: generally you will feel as a lonely person if you are depressed,even though                     you are surrounded by a bunch of people.
2 Feeling fatigue: you start feeling as a weak and lonely person , willing to not show                             interest on any activities and you just wanna lie somewhere and stay alone.
3 Frequent memory problems : you start forgetting things because you are not showing                       attention on your daily activities
4 Insomnia : Depression makes  hard to stay asleep, or cause you to wake up too early                        and not able to get back to sleep,you may still feel tired when you wake up.
5 Risk of heart attack: if you are  a depressed person you are very prone to heart attacks
6 Lower interest in sex: as mentioned above you lose interest on other activities including                      sex which may lead  problems in your marital relationships.
 Immunity goes down: your body performance would be go down which makes you less                       immune to diseases.
Abnormal weight changes: depression affects your appetite too
9 Suicidal thoughts : these is the most dangerous effect of falling into depression you get                       frequent thoughts of suicides.



Types of depression 

         Depression can be of many types, depending upon the symptoms it varies from mild to dangerous. In this article we discuss major types of depression so that it can help you to decide in which category you have fallen if you are a victim!!

    1.MAJOR DEPRESSION :

                            we feel sad frequently when some of our loved ones passes away,when we fail in some important exam, or we rejected in an interview, It is a very common phenomenon in our lives these sadness will be just for one day or maximum of two days but if it last long more than two weeks then it is known as major depression also known as clinical depression.
                                             generally  a person who is suffering from clinical depression would be sad almost all the time in a day, a constant sense of hopelessness and grief  is a major symptom that you may have Major depression disorder (MDD)

symptoms:

  1. you are sad most of the day usually for no reason
  2.  you feel very less energetic 
  3. you cant sleep or want to sleep more than usual
  4. you lose or gain weight suddenly
  5. you are less interested in daily activities 
  6. you feel unworthy of yourself and your life
  7. suicidal thoughts

Triggers:

  1. when your loved ones passes away
  2. social isolation
  3. physical or emotional or sexual abuse

Treatment:

MDD is generally treated with antidepressant medications,like selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors(SSRIs) and psychotherapy.

2.persistent depression :

         persistent depression is also termed as  Dysthymia, it is a continuous long term form of depression it lasts for several years and affects your daily activities.

symptoms:

  1. you may lose interest in your daily activities
  2. low self esteem
  3. feeling  hopeless
  4. lack productivity
  5. self criticism

causes

  1. hereditary i..e, a family history of these condition
  2. a history of other medical condition like bipolar disorder
  3. stressful life 
  4. frequent fights in relationships

Treatment:

   It is often treated with antidepressant medications and psychotherapy and changing your lifestyle


3.Bipolar disorder:

             Bipolar disorder often known as maniac depression , a mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings that include emotional highs(mania or hypo mania)and lows(depression).

manic symptoms:

  • feeling overly happy 
  • rapidly changing subjects while talking
  • doing risky things

depressive symptoms:

  • acting very sad
  • over sleeping
  • eating too much or little
  • frequently complaining of not feeling well
  • thinking about death or suicide

causes:

  1. extreme stress
  2. genetics
  3. abnormalities in structure of your brain

Treatment:

  • medications like mood stabilizers like lithium
  • psychotherapy
  • lifestyle changes
  • and other treatments like electro convulsive therapy (ECT)
                 there are other types of depression such as psychotic depression, perinatal depression,    pre menstural  dysphonic disorder, seasonal depression, situational depression etc....if you are interested comment below i will post separate article about each and every type of depression



Life style changes which will help you in speed recovery :

  • Healthy eating
  • exercising daily
  • meditation
  • getting a good quality sleep daily
  • surround yourselves with supportive friends
  • managing stress by doing things which you enjoy and love
  • supportive relationships

summary:

           Depression is a serious disorder,its common symptoms are prolonged sadness,you can treat yourselves by making small changes in your lifestyle,like eating healthy, regular exercise,meditation,getting plenty of sleep,consult a doctor if you think you have a serious depression as soon as possible
